Yes, adjustments are very safe. However, if you have osteoporosis, are taking blood thinners, or have a history of strokes, then a modified adjusting approach will be used. I routinely adjust children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Generally not at all. Pain occurs when the patient is unable to relax, or when there is significant muscle spasm “guarding” the area. As a rule, I never force my way through muscle spasm, or adjust the spine in a direction that elicits pain.

So many of my patients are surprised to feel how tender the spinal joints are when I challenge or palpate them. These tender points are the “underlying” problem that can lead to a relapse. However, in the absence of such pain, you do not need to be adjusted frequently.

In my office, an appointment lasts 15 minutes. This allows enough time to stretch the spine, loosen tight muscles, and adjust the involved areas. More time can be allotted if muscle stimulation or ultrasound is required.

Most of my first time patients usually find relief within 4-6 weeks. However, if the patient does not implement a regular stretching and exercise program, they usually come back when there is a relapse. Most often we get them “fixed up” and we do not see them for some time. Usually by the third or fourth relapse, patients start to realize that maintaining some regular care is a worthwhile investment. It’s not addictive, it just makes sense to stay on top of your condition.

Most patients find significant relief in 6-8 treatments.  Many patients opt to continue their adjustments beyond that period to ensure further healing.  But the amount of care you wish to receive is always up to you.
